Dust off your resumes

I’m in a podcast rut. My listening diet has shrunk from a smorgasbord of audio delicacies into crumbs of the same shows, week after week, serving very specific purposes.

I think it’s been a while since a new podcast has really knocked me off my feet, Escaping NXIVM-style, though I did binge Brainwashed earlier this year.

At the beginning of September, CBC released their slate of fall podcasts, some of which look promising—I’m especially excited about Unlocking the Fountain, which launches on Tuesday. I do love a good science podcast. It’s a look at the ~mysteries of aging~ and whether we’re any closer to unlocking the proverbial fountain of youth.

If you’ve been listening to something that has you taking the long route so you can listen more, let us know!!!

We have so many jobs for you this week. So many! Dust off those resumes because everyone wants to hire you.

Starting the job postings off hot with this job from Acast for a content development manager. This job actually looks like so much fun—they want someone who can manage partnerships with potential talent and stakeholders in the podcast industry, develop new podcast ideas and formats, and pitch those podcasts. I want this job in 10 years.

You love sports. You love Twitter. You should apply to be the social media editor for theScore. I do not want this job in 10 years because I have only a passing interest in sports and want to spend less time on Twitter, not more.

Another job in sports journalism for someone else! Rogers Sportsnet is hiring a part-time broadcast associate

CTV News Toronto is hiring a producer! Apply by October 5.

There are a few fun job openings at the Globe and Mail, including a photojournalist apprenticeship program! This is a six-week paid position for early career photojournalists and does not require formal education. Apply by October 8. Check out other postings for editor positions.

You have until midnight tonight (September 24) to apply for the producer position with CBC’s new weekly world news podcast we told you about last week!

And for national news folks, apply to be an associate producer for The National by 11:59 p.m. on September 27.

Calling all Ottawegians, CBC is hiring a field producer for the parliamentary bureau! Apply by October 1.

And finally, a full-time, permanent producer position with CBC Podcasts. Apply by October 1.

Pod People is looking for freelancers to add to their roster! Connect with other audio professionals and get matched with clients looking for producers. Sign up here!

Newmark J-school at CUNY is hosting a panel on who gets to tell whose story on September 28 at 5 pm Eastern. Registration is free, and it looks like a really valuable panel for anyone who does documentary work.

Popular Science is looking for a freelance science editor to take on 15-20 hours of work a week, at $44/hour. See Rachel Feltman’s tweet for more details!

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to bring in my favourite Bachelor recap podcast, Love to See It. In a year where pandemic production schedules have meant we’ve seen pretty much back-to-back Bachelorette / Bachelor / Bachelorette / Paradise seasons since last fall, I appreciate Emma and Claire’s critical, but loving, dissections of a fundamentally bananas television franchise.

Love to See It is the phoenix rising up from the ashes of their long-running HuffPost podcast, Here to Make Friends. Emma and Claire were both laid off in the Buzzfeed bloodbath back in March of this year, which saw dozens of HuffPost staffers laid off and HuffPost Canada shut down entirely.

They take an explicitly feminist lens to a show with an explicitly patriarchal foundation, and bring in guests from Bachelor Nation and celebrity fans like Daniel Radcliffe. Harry Potter and the Curse of the Flat Tummy Tea when???

We have an exciting new show to announce this week!

Our very own Katie Jensen is hosting a new podcast for Brain Canada, all about our very own cranial command centres.

We’re talking healthy brains, dead brains, even brains in jars!

That’s right… this podcast looks at GROWING BRAINS IN JARS.

I did not know that was a thing and I will never be the same again.

Producers Jay Cockburn and Max Collins are out-of-their-minds excited for this one.

Check out the trailer and subscribe to Playing with Marbles wherever you listen to podcasts.

Follow the show on Instagram and Twitter at @marblespod for fun brain facts!

We want to hear from you! What are you looking for in your podcast news? Let us know on Twitter, Instagram, or by email at info@vocalfrystudios.com.

Thanks to Emily Latimer for editing this newsletter, and to Katie Jensen for designing it. We’ll see you again on October 1.

Until then, here’s an update from the dog that producer Max Collins saw at the barber.

Yours in friends and fries,

Michal
