Queer Podcasts to Keep you Company in the Lazy Days of Summer

Now that we’re into July and summer is in full swing, some of your favourite weekly podcasts might be taking a break. Personally, I like to go through old episodes of shows during the summer. If I learned anything in 2020, it’s that there’s no such thing as a slow news day anymore, but summer always feels like a time to slow down. I want to spend time listening to big stories about little things. I want to lie in the park and read my book. I want to bike around the city very slowly, having little visits with different friends.
If you’re looking for some podcasts to keep you company on (hopefully) lazy summer days, this week on The Big Fry, we’ve got an excerpt from Vocal Fry producer Max Collins’ latest blog on ways to support gay creators beyond Pride Month, which include stellar podcast recommendations.
Anyway, Bette Midler sharing Megan Stalter’s video about corporations during Pride Month made me laugh a lot.
From Max Collins’ story, Pride Is Over, But You Can Still Support Gay Creators
Here are some podcasts made by queer creators Max recommends:
Maintenance Phase, from Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. I’m a big fan of this show too — Max recommends the Snake Oil episode, and I love the one on Celery Juice because it gets into the story behind the Medical Medium.
Inappropriate Questions, hosted by Harvinder Wadhwa and Elena Hudgins Lyle (who has written about how they became a CBC Podcasts host for our blog!)
Cancel Me, Daddy, from Katelyn Burns and Oliver-Ashe Kleine
Max also gives some ideas on how to gay up your life post-Pride Month:
Learn about queer history, and take time to learn more about why marginalized groups are calling to defund the police. Demand more space for stories about queer culture from your favourite content makers. Support queer artists and organizations. You can listen to the episode of CBC’s The Doc Project about Rainbow Railroad, one of my favourite organizations, and then go give them money!
Read the full blog on our website, and then take a listen to Max’s podcast series about drag in Vancouver.
