I promised spooky podcasts, and I will bring you spooky podcasts. But I have to start with something not too spooky, because I am a scaredy cat, and I need to work my way up, okay? This is a newsletter for horror-curious scaredy cats.
But there’s another holiday to get to before we hit Halloween, at least in Canada. Thanksgiving looks like it’s going to be a lovely summer day (at least in Toronto), and I’m going to attempt to make a turkey for the very first time. And then I’ll serve it in the garden, as it should be.
My cooking plan is to find every interview I can with a) Samin Nosrat and b) Ina Garten and make a playlist out of them. I need my culinary idols hyping me up for this one. Wish me luck!
Hey Apple-heads! If you have keen news judgment and a love for push alerts, Apple News is hiring an editor for Apple News Canada. This position can be based out of Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. Oui, SVP!
We’ve got two jobs at Rogers Sports and Media for you this week:
They’re looking for a producer to work across Sportsnet’s different platforms and showcase their main properties—we’re talking Raptors. We’re talking Blue Jays. We’re talking NHL. Sports!
The Frequency Podcast Network is also looking for a manager of business development. Podcasting! It’s a business, baby! And the business needs management!
This is a U.S. based job but looks v. v. interesting so I had to share! Neon Hum is hiring a program administrator for their recurring editor’s bootcamp. This bootcamp is pretty sweet—it’s a free, eight-week training for people from underrepresented groups who want to become podcast editors. We’ll keep an eye on when you can apply for their next session. In the meantime, apply to administer the program!
Alright, multi-hyphenate readers. How many of you fancy yourselves filmmakers? Just as I suspected. Hot Docs and Netflix are funding short, comedic documentaries, and you have up until November 3, 2021, to apply for funding.
We love a Writers' Co-op Workshop! On Tuesday, October 26, Wudan Yan and Jenni Gritters are hosting a workshop on mental health management for freelancers, featuring guests Fritz Galette and Ruksana Hussein. Tickets are $25, but the secret to mental wellness? Priceless.
Hey writers and wannabe-writers! Check out Dame Magazine’s ‘Newcomer Corner’ Pitch Guidelines. This is a platform for writers with no professional byline. Also, if you haven’t already subscribed to Sonia Weiser’s Opportunities of the Week newsletter, you gotta! She’s editing Dame’s Newcomer Corner, but her twice-weekly newsletter is SO full of writing opportunities you simply won’t know what to do with yourself.
I started listening to a show called Strange Phenomenon, a paranormal documentary podcast. I was hooked by the first episode about the Fermi paradox, because I’m a teeny bit obsessed with the search for extraterrestrial life. Call an episode “Where are the aliens?” and yes, I will be there, because I have the same question.
The storytelling is very straightforward, which I like—there are no alien fakeouts, no reports of weird occurrences that turned out to be something else, it’s more of an examination of what we actually know and why we don’t know more. The spooky music does a lot of heavy lifting to make it feel more spooky. It’s a fun, sciencey look at paranormal phenomena, and for week one of spooky podcasts, that feels like a good place to start.
Read an interview with hosts of Stories from the Field, Maureen Cava and Susan Blue, on U of T News.
Katie Jensen and Sabrina Brathwaite produced this public health nursing podcast, and all six episodes are out now!
Have you listened to Playing With Marbles yet? It’s about brains, and it’s SO GOOD. Also, follow us on TikTok! We're having fun over there.
We want to hear from you! What are you looking for in your podcast news? Let us know on Twitter, Instagram, or by email at info@vocalfrystudios.com.
Thanks to Emily Latimer for editing this newsletter, and to Katie Jensen for designing it.
We’ll see you again on October 15. Until then, here’s an update from producer Kattie Laur's dog, Joe, looking snug as a bug in a rug!
Fun fact: as I write this, I am in a similar position.
Yours in friends and fries,
Michal
